HOW TO GET FOSSIL POKÉMON

Omanyte, Kabuto, and Aerodactyl — three ancient Pokémon revived from fossils. One critical choice in Mt. Moon, and one free gift hiding in Pewter City.

You can only pick one! Near the end of Mt. Moon, a Super Nerd guards two fossils. After defeating him, you choose either the Dome Fossil or the Helix Fossil. The other fossil is gone forever.

Enter Mt. Moon from Pewter City (Route 3)

Mt. Moon is the cave between Pewter City and Cerulean City, accessible from the east end of Route 3. Navigate the floors until you find the fossil chamber on B2F — no HMs required to get through.

2

Find & Defeat the Super Nerd on B2F

Near the exit toward Cerulean, a Super Nerd stands between two glittering items on the ground. Defeat him — his team uses Magnemite and Voltorb. Ground-type moves are very effective.

💡 Prepare beforehand: Stock up on Potions in Pewter before entering the cave. The Super Nerd is the hardest trainer inside.
3

Choose Your Fossil — Left = Dome, Right = Helix

After defeating the Super Nerd, pick up your chosen fossil. The other disappears immediately. Think about your team — both are Water/Rock types, but Kabuto leans physical while Omastar leans special.

🧠 Quick guide: Pick Dome if you want a fast physical sweeper with Slash. Pick Helix if you want a bulky special attacker with high Defense.
4

Reach Cinnabar Island (Requires Surf)

Hold onto the fossil until you get the Surf HM from the Safari Zone. Then Surf south from Pallet Town to reach Cinnabar Island. This is also where Gym 7 (Blaine) is located.

5

Enter the Pokémon Lab & Revive Your Fossil

The Pokémon Lab is on the west side of Cinnabar Island. Find the scientist on the ground floor (room to the right), hand over your fossil, step outside, re-enter, and collect your revived Pokémon at level 30.

🎯 Timing: Reviving right when you arrive on Cinnabar gives you a fresh Water/Rock Pokémon for the Fire Gym, Seafoam Islands, and the Elite Four.

Aerodactyl sprite

#142 AERODACTYL — OLD AMBER

One of the fastest Pokémon in Gen I — totally free from Pewter City. Most players miss this entirely because of where the gift is hidden.

🪨

Missable free gift! The Old Amber is in the Pewter City Museum back room — enter through the back door on the Route 3 side, not the main entrance. A scientist there gives it to you for free, no conditions.

1

Go to Pewter Museum — Use the Back Door

The museum is in north Pewter City. Skip the main front entrance (costs ₽50). Instead, walk around to the back of the building and enter through the door on the Route 3 side — it's free and leads to a separate back room.

🚪 Easy to miss: Most players pay the front entrance fee and never know there's a free back entrance with a fossil inside.
2

Talk to the Scientist Inside

A scientist in a white coat is in the back room. Talk to him and accept the Old Amber — it goes into your Key Items. He'll say it contains ancient Pokémon DNA.

3

Revive at Cinnabar Island Lab

Same process as the Mt. Moon fossils. Hand the Old Amber to the scientist at the Cinnabar Island Pokémon Lab and collect Aerodactyl at level 30.

130 base Speed — Aerodactyl is one of the fastest Pokémon in the entire game and it's completely free. Don't skip it.

Why use Aerodactyl

  • 130 base Speed — almost always first
  • Rock/Flying — solid offensive typing
  • Learns Fly (HM utility)
  • Devastates Ice, Bug, Fire types

Moves to teach it

  • Fly (HM02 — Route 16 gift)
  • Rock Slide (various TMs)
  • Earthquake (TM26 — Silph Co.)
  • Ancient Power (level up)
