Two of the most powerful Pokémon in the game — and both are totally free if you know where to look. Complete step-by-step catching walkthroughs for Fire Red and Leaf Green.
The Sleeping Pokémon — blocks two major routes and packs 160 base HP. One of the best team members in the game, available completely free.
Don't miss it! Snorlax must be woken with the Poké Flute before you can interact with it. Once you enter the battle, if you knock it out and don't have a second chance — the other Snorlax is still available on the other route.
Head to Lavender Town (east of Celadon City via Route 8). Fight your way up all 7 floors of Pokémon Tower, defeating Team Rocket grunts along the way. At the top, you'll find Mr. Fuji being held captive.
After defeating the final enemy at the top of Pokémon Tower, Mr. Fuji is freed. Return to his house in Lavender Town (south side of town). He'll thank you and hand over the Poké Flute — a key item that wakes sleeping Pokémon.
Two Snorlax block two different routes. Pick whichever is most convenient for your current progress:
This is critical. Snorlax is a one-time encounter per route. Save before using the Poké Flute so you can reset if things go wrong.
Open your bag, go to Key Items, and use the Poké Flute while standing next to Snorlax. It wakes up and immediately attacks — the battle starts. Weaken it to low HP (red zone), apply Sleep with a move like Spore or Sing, then throw Ultra Balls.
| Location | Level | How to Access | Version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route 12 | Lv. 30 | South of Lavender Town, use Poké Flute | Both |
| Route 16 | Lv. 30 | West of Celadon, use Cut + Poké Flute | Both |
You can catch both! If you catch the Snorlax on Route 12, the one on Route 16 is still available. Catch both and trade or use one as an HM slave — it learns Strength, Surf, Rock Smash, and more.
The Transport Pokémon — a rare Water/Ice type with massive bulk. You receive one for free from Silph Co. before the seventh gym, making it one of the best carries in the game.
Two methods: You can get a guaranteed free Lapras during the main story at Silph Co., or catch a wild one at Icefall Cave post-game. The Silph Co. Lapras is far easier and comes at a great point in the story.
Saffron City is in the center of Kanto, accessible from Celadon (east), Lavender (west), Cerulean (south via underground path), or Vermilion (north). To get in, give the guards Fresh Water, Soda Pop, or Lemonade — buy them from the vending machines on the roof of the Celadon Department Store.
Silph Co. is the large building in the center of Saffron. Team Rocket has taken over all 11 floors. You need to find the Card Key on 5F to unlock doors on other floors. The teleporter pads on each floor move you between levels — the layout is intentionally confusing.
Giovanni is on the 11th floor. His team includes Nidorino, Kangaskhan, Rhyhorn, and Nidoqueen — all ground and normal types. Water, Ice, and Grass moves work well. After defeating him, he leaves the building.
After defeating Giovanni, go back down to the 7th floor. An employee in the northwest room will thank you for saving the company and give you a Lapras at level 15 as a gift. It has no Poké Ball cost and cannot be refused — just talk to him.
Icefall Cave is on Four Island, which is only accessible after beating the Elite Four and obtaining the National Pokédex (requires seeing 60+ Pokémon). You also need the Rainbow Pass to reach the Sevii Islands beyond Three Island.
From Vermilion City, take the S.S. Anne dock area and board the ferry to the Sevii Islands. Navigate to Four Island (also called Floe Island) — it's the snowy island home to Lorelei from the Elite Four.
Icefall Cave is on the north side of Four Island. Surf is required to enter and navigate the cave. Wild Lapras appear in the water inside the cave at a low encounter rate (~10%) — bring plenty of Ultra Balls and be patient.
| Method | Level | When Available | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silph Co. Gift | Lv. 15 | Mid-game (before Gym 7) | Easy — Free gift |
| Icefall Cave | Lv. 35–40 | Post-game (National Dex required) | Medium — Low encounter rate |
